Personal Statement:
When a client makes the difficult decision to enter therapy, I first listen to their unique situation and concerns so that together we can develop a plan for our work together. Collaboration is central to providing effective therapy. I strive to engage clients in active problem solving, utilizing methods that are both sensible and practical. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral therapy, a method which helps clients become more reflective and self aware as well as skilled at using self corrective techniques outside of therapy. Recently I have added mindfulness and relaxation techniques to assist clients in managing stress and symptoms of anxiety.
Adults and young adults comprise half of the clients I meet with each week. These clients often report having problems with anxiety, depression, life transition and health concerns. I also meet with adolescent clients. The format of treatment for adolescents may involve individual therapy, family therapy or a combination of these approaches. The decision of which approach is right for a young person is made after discussion and agreement with the client and their family.
Parents who bring children for help with behavior or life crisis issues often are served best with family therapy. Individual play techniques can assist children dealing with loss, family stress or trauma. When families seek help for their children for behavioral issues, I work with the parents to determine possible causes which may include assessment for attention or learning disorders. Work with parents is critical in all situations as they are best able to initiate changes outside the therapy hour that can help support behavior change in their child.
